Cancer Conquered! My 1st Full Marathon Run!

On August 16, 2010, I finished my 1st ever 42.2k run. It's not an official organized event for anyone who wanted to join. There was only one runner, and that's me.

The aim of this activity was to earn enough funds to help my friend's dad who is battling cancer one day at a time.

So many people supported this personal event of mine and I thank you all... And yes it's safe to say that at least for now, my friend's dad conquered cancer.

You can read the blog entry by Owee Salva about my run by clicking the link below...

And here's the record from my watch...

Race Conquered! Milo Marathon '10!

Copy of DSCI0098

(12.17.10)

I have been out for a long time and this might be my last official race. At least, not for a very long time. Anyway, I did so well in this race I broke my PR for 21k.

I'll still be running and updating this blog but I just can't fit race events in my schedule. This blog isn't just about joining running events anyway :)

Here's my record of this run last July 4, 2010 (if I'm not mistaken)

Race Conquered! Epic Relay!

(07.08.10)

This is not just about the Epic Relay but getting through rough times, facing challenges in life and finishing strong.

A few weeks before this event, I went through hard times, it was just too difficult for me to even attend practices. I decided it would be better if I practiced alone. It was better till running itself became difficult. I begged before God to allow me to find a replacement for myself in the race then I got the news that I/we were already registered and replacing a runner will not be easy.

I still decided to continue and join the race only because I gave my word. I was spiritually broken but I’m physically fit so “I guess I can still at least, finish the race” that’s what I said to myself.

MY 1ST LEG

Now about my performance, my team was included in the second heat. (2nd set of teams to be released at 6am), I decided to just run the leg. And after a few hundred meters I asked myself “how can you just run your first leg when you can do better?” then I decided to win. From that moment on, I lead… I never looked back, I just kept on going. The police escort in front of me made me feel so good! It felt like I was the most important person at that moment it time! Thing is… I was! I felt so tired but I kept on running, I kept on telling myself “This is what I prepared for” “This is what I’ve been dragging myself to just to practice” “Fuck it! “Fuck it!

Van 2 went pass me, cheering me on, witnessing my lead and the game face I was wearing.

A few kilometers before the exchange point of runners, tears fell from my eyes as I saw views of yacht resting on blue waters that reflected the sky. Mixed emotions were running through my whole body. I felt so proud and limitless while being angry and fueled with angst and it’s all happening while I’m being surrounded by beauty. How can one handle that?

At around 150 meters away, the police man said your almost there! Voices of my group (Van 1) cheering for me validated what the policeman said. It made me more determined to run even faster! I swore I was going to seal any chances other runners might have to get near me.

Here are photos of me sealing the deal! Thanks to Aldwin Aspillera for these, He’s a great photographer, even greater when he’s taking my pics… How can he go wrong?

Finally, I got to where the exchange is, I passed the baton to the runner 2 (Carlo) and he quickly gave his best to run his 1st leg that later on we realized was uphill!

That’s how my 1st leg went, 2 more legs to go!

MY 2nd LEG

No here’s when I died… :) At 3:30pm on Saturday, I met my teammate Narod at the peak of Mt. Samat in Bataan, He was the best runner of our team and the last runner to finish the 1st set of runs. He finished really strong considering he got the hardest track to run, it was uphill and I doubt I could finish that 10k uphill had I been the one to do it. Now, he was there, baton was passed on to me and I’m about to start the 2nd leg of our run. My first run was a success; this leg should not fall short compared to my first, that’s what I said,

So on to the race! You think uphill was insane? Try running 10k downhill! The road was so steep, even a wooden block will roll down that wicked road! I couldn’t decide weather to let gravity pull me or not, coz if I did, then I’ll end up tripping over face first and God knows what my face would look after! So I settled keeping my steps small, making sure I had good traction and wont trip head first! Remember, it had just rained when I started running.

So I went on running then I went pass a runner whose teammate finished ahead of Narod, then ran a bit more till a runner from behind me overtook and gave me a salute! That point I just gave in to the idea that he was simply faster than me… till a few kilometers later, he started looking back at me, stopped then drank while back pedaling! I didn’t know what he was up to but I felt challenged! His teammates gave him water after a few kilometers and right after a turn my team also did the same thing, but I didn’t stop to drink! I said “May hahabulin ako” Then I began increasing my speed and my strides though I was already running flat-footed due to exhaustion! Just imagine how the sound of my every stride alarmed this runner that I was getting closer and closer and closer!? It was threatening! Haha!

To cut the long story short, I was able to catch up! Then I invited him to pace me, then he said “ok lang mauna ka na” hehe! Now, there were some uphills too, and I used that to increase the distance between us, I ran even faster uphill knowing most of the runners will decrease their speed when going up. Now I began looking back to check where he was, then later on when I checked again, he was gone… :D I now hear my teammates cheering for me and again, I ran even faster to get to them! When I saw them eating halo-halo, I went passed the officials and went straight to anyone who had halo-halo! Then a race official had to go to me and asked for my race number and took the baton and passed on to the next runner! Next thing I knew, no one gave me halo-halo, I was sitting on the front seat, dead tired. Maybe seconds after that… I was in coma!

Here’s a pic of me taken by a great photographer Estan Cabigas who was my classmate and now is also into running! This picture was taken 2 kilometers after my start point. I must admit, I look so HOT in this pic! Thanks Estan!

3rd and LAST LEG (Challenge not over YET!)

12 midnight, I knew Narod was on his way to the place where he should meet me, apparently, the station was transferred to a new venue and he had a hard time looking for it, he arrived a little over 1am and organizers decided they should start the last leg of the race at 3am so every runner in every team can start all at the same time…

I had to ask Aldwin to ride his bike with me while I run, he was a big help especially at times when I wanted to give up…

Now, I’m heading to Zambalez…

I declared to Aldwin that my aim was not to walk even for a minute even if I was so tired and my feet were cramping… The whole Zambalez could hear my strides! No exaggeration, I as literally marching my way to the exchange point! I just had to finish this leg the best way I can. And so I did. I just heard my mates in the exchange point cheering me on and there! I did it! Now its time for me to cheer them on too!

I never really had the chance to thank them one by one but here’s my chance to do it! And in writing! In alphabetical order!

Aldwin
I never thought you’ll be my at all! 1st time I saw you, I thought you were cocky… I still think you are, but I discovered you’re more than that! You’re a big guy (pun intended) with a big heart to help out gay guys in distress! Like me! Biking with me while I ran my last leg was something I will forever be thankful for, I was already in autopilot mode and I wouldn’t have finished my last leg without your help, keeping me up and steadfast. Thanks so much! I’m looking forward to trying out biking with you soon!

Ben
I’m so glad I had a little chat with you about Fil-Ams in Olongapo, the conversation was the typical kind of talk, but what made it special is that it gave me a glimpse of who you are and how you think. I like what I saw Ben, it’s very inspiring.

Carl
Thanks so much for taking the chance in doing some practice runs with me, I know, that you know, that we have huge differences but you didn’t allow that to prevent you from adding me up as one of your friend! NAX! I admire you for being someone who’s not judgmental, someone who does not discriminate and willing to take chances! You are a free spirit! You just have to realize it! You are who you’ve always wanted to be! You’ve always been :)

Charles (Koyang/RBC)
I will never forget how you took care of me each and every time I finish a leg, I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to give back the favor. You did not just attend to my needs after my runs; you made sure I was alive! Thanks so much for running the “extra” mile, I see you finish your runs with confidence and conviction. Like what you told me. “We’ve come a long way” indeed we have Koyang. I’m proud and honored to be your RB! And most of all, your bespren!

Faye
We never really had the time to get to know each other especially in this race, but I feel so comfortable in your presence. I feel like I’ve known you for years. I guess it is our mutual love for music that keeps u connected, I hope I can be your friend and vice versa… I’m excited to get to know you more 

Martin
Since I learned that you’re from Marikina too, I was ecstatic! I finnaly, I know someone from the city I grew up in! I’m so glad I met you when I attended some ultimate Frisbee beginner’s nights, I’m also looking forward to playing with you in the future! Nagagalingan ako sayo grabe! You deserve to catch my beautiful throws! At tuturuan mo pa ako mag basketball! Don’t forget!

Mitch
You’re the one who showed the greatest improvement, it wasn’t too long ago when you could hardly finish a 3 Kilometer run. And in the relay, I witnessed you ran that 11 kilometer road with full confidence and style! Not to mention “under the unforgiving sun!” Mitch, you were my hero in this event, I will always look back to this race and be inspired by you. Keep it up!

Narod
You are one of the most sensitive straight guys I have ever known, not to mention helpful when it comes to sports or just about anything at all! I never felt uncomfortable whenever I tell you stories about my personal life. You serve as one of my inspirations in life, yu stay strong no matter what comes to your life; I feel that you are ready to face anything that life presents to you. Stay the same will you?

Owee
I love you and you know why… I almost quit but you kept me holding on, I’m almost done running away and when I’m through with it, let’s party ok? I hope I inspired you on how I performed in this particular event, not just about the running, but in being strong and driven. I love you so much.

Richard
Chard!!! I only had around 30 minutes of bonding time with you, remember when we were talking about photography and bikes when we were about to leave our inn? I leaned so much about you; I hope get to know you more, you are an interesting person and hope we could be good friends!

So there you go! I know it’s not enough to read about it, you readers of my blog should try it out to know how it feels. I’d like to invite you to next year’s relay. And I also would like to invite you to run with us “RodRunners!!!” Photo taken by Richard!

Here are random pics taken by my teammates! And watch the videos at the end!

42K laban sa cancer! (fighting cancer through running)

Dear Friends,

I'ts me Brad, I'm inviting everyone to participate in this activity to help raise funds for my friend's father who is now in a war against cancer. My crusade against cancer started in November 2008 when it took Cha-Cha away from me and my family. Shortly after that, my mom had multiple cyst in her breast, and with both luck and blessing, the doctors found out through series of test that they were benign.

Now I have another chance of getting even with it for taking away my pet and for threatening my family of taking my mom away too, I'm doing a full 42 kilometer run and to generate funds, I'm inviting everyone to pledge 100 Pesos per kilometer that I'll run or if possible, you may pledge the full amount of 4,200 Pesos. And what I'm committed to is to finish the 42 kilometer distance. This will be my 1st 42 kilometer run by the way and I promised to make the 1st one very special.

Help me, my friend and his father fight cancer again by pledging or simply take part just by spreading the word about this.

Contact details to know more on how to pledge are written on the ad above!

Thank you so much,
-Brad

(04.15.10)

I'm preparing for my 1st full marathon hopefully on December of this year... I still don't have a proper program to follow and even if I had one, I don't think I'll be able to go through it anyways.

For now, I will (try) to write write just about anything that will help me reach my final goal and that is to (at least) finish my 1st evahhhh full Marathon!

I also plan to make this run just a little bit more special, so I'm stirin' up a little somethin' somethin' on the side...

also stay tuned for that.

But that's all for now, I have to start doing something to help me get me physically and mentally prepared for this!

Photojournalism "A year and a Day ago"

A year and a day ago (April 25, 2009) I presented & defended my work in front of 3 people who have (supposedly) mastered the art of photojournalism. This was the last requirement for me to pass my course.

I owe a lot to this course, I made some really good friends along the way. Through doing the documentaries, I realized how important my life is, how special I am and how I really want to work with animals.

To my professors and mentors, I know you were expecting me to be a PJ after graduation but I chose to do something else, I would like to let you know that all your efforts in teaching me did not and will never go to waist for it had served a different purpose and that is to make me realize what I really want in life. You all helped me / made me realize that. Ü

To celebrate all these, I made the this video that showcases the works that I defended A Year and a Day Ago.

Coffee and hidden butterfly

(04.04.10)

I love coffee, I guess everyone who knows me also knows can survive months without checking my email but never a day without a cup of coffee Ü And here's a freshly brewed cup of the black potion I so love!

Btw, there's a hidden butterfly somewhere in the picture, can you tell me where I can find it? :)

New MRT postpaid card!

(04.06.10)

I use the MRT (Metro Rail Transit) a lot and I usually buy the prepaid cards or the "Stored Value" so I don't keep on wrestling my way just to get those single journey tickets!

I'm so glad to see that they came up with a stored value card with a new look! One that does not have the face of a government official!

2 words... LOVE IT!

(03.15.10)

Yep! she's on Alab's kuranda bed! Look Tine, if Alab finds out you're using his bed, I'd bet he'll... lick you on the face! :)

But seriously Tine, I know you're the cutest among the 3 but please grow up? Even just a little bit?

Love Yourself

(04.01.10)

Height: 5'9" Weight: 143 lbs. Waistline: 32 in Chest: 34 in. Glute: 36 in. With very thin legs. Very unfit. A former lactose intolerant and insomniac. A frustrated runner, a former ultimate frisbee athlete that still has a lot to improve on. Can't speak english well, has 3 cats when he want 6, wants a sporting canine when he has a soft and sweet pet dog. Took up 2 courses in college and still wants more. Yep! That's me!

BUT...

I Love Myself.

I have learned to accept who I am, what I'm not and what I have and don't have and that is what I think is the secret to truly loving yourself. I still wish for something else or better, but I let go of that and just believe that I'll get them at the right time. Or maybe I won't get them at all... And that's fine with me I guess... :)

Since I started being contended, I had less frustrations, I mean, sure I still want to study some more, I still want an agility dog, I still want to run faster and I still want big tight glutes! But guess what!? Doesn't mean I can't run my dog even if he's not athletic? Doesn't mean I can't take up another course in the future, it doesn't mean I can't practice running whenever I can? And it doesn't mean I cant improve my physique when I get the chance right?

So go on! Accept who you are, how you look, who you're not, WHAT your not and live a life that's worth living! It is in that way you can only, truly love yourself Ü

Tell me your self acceptance story by hitting the comment box! I wanna know about it!

Meet Alab!!!

Today is ALAB's birthday! and as promised in the previous blog that I wrote announcing his existence which you can read by clicking THIS, here you will find the entry about his full story!

You have read about my cats and now it's time to post about my new (youngest) child, his name is ALAB (Blaze in English.) Formerly known as Caesar, I decided to give him a Filipino name, after all he is an Aspin (Asong Pinoy / native dog of the Philippines)

Contrary to his name that suggests power and strength, Alab remains sweet and gentle, a perfect companion dog for my senior folks. But wait till he sees her sister Sheba ay nako! that's when he bursts into flames with excitement! He'd play with her sister all day long! So cute to see them both!

Me and my friends/mentors, started training Alab when he was just around 2 weeks old, it took me forever before I finally decided to adopt him. He was the only one left in the shelter, all his brothers and sisters were already adopted, then a fellow volunteer of mine said someone was already interested on taking him, I said "that's it! I'm taking him home!"

Here's my attempt to tell the story through photos. Here it goes...

*Here is the first picture I took of him at home, it's his first 24 hours in the Feliciano household. More importantly, it's his first 24 hours of having a permanent home.
*One of my cats (Val) was trying to intimidate him; trying to show who the boss is!

*Maybe a week after that, I brought him back to the shelter wearing his new collar! From the pictures you can already tell that he was a shy dog. look how small he is! Such a tiny little thing :)

*Here's another one... cute!!!
*Months later I decided to have him neutered since he's starting to mark and I hate it! I bring him in the office and it was embarrassing how he was painting the corners yellow with his spray! Special thanks to Dr. Wilford Almoro and kuya Khevin for doing the procedure!
*Here's a closer look!
*And Here's Alab one day before he turns 9 months!

*Here's him standing gracefully a week and 2 days ago!

*Here's another one at the door waiting for me to go in!
Today March 28 is his birthday and he is one year old! I know I've said this a thousand times before but I'll say it again... I have yet to write about what I do for a living and Alab is a big part of it! He actually is my co-worker or office mate but from a different department! So watch out for that!

Also, wait for his birthday party pictures soon!

Race Congquered! The Amazing Kidney Race!

(03.13.10)

Last week (03.07.10) I my 1st 15k for the Amazing Kidney Race. Though I was so disappointed the race started very late, (6:30am as supposed to 5:45am) I'm just glad I made it to the cut-off time for me to earn a finisher medal. Cut-off time was 1:45 and I finished at 1:44+

I never got the chance to even wear my medal coz I was so in a hurry for work! It's my second for this year and I love having them!

I just have to mention that the race were flocked by runners who have bubble butts and are wearing tights! I see runners in tights all the time (both men and woman) but they don't always have nice tight butts! Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying don't wear tights if you don't have the buns for it. All I'm saying is that I appreciate those extra lumps.

WHO CARES ABOUT MY OPINION ANYWAY? you can say :)

Butt, I mean BUT yeah, this event had full of 'em protruding butts!

Dear Jerry

(02.22.10)

Dear Jerry,

Remember the last time we were together? I think that was way back April 2002! That day was so much fun! It was our graduation day! That day we finished high school! Though we continued to be friends, exchanging messages and all, I never really got the chance to see you again until last Wednesday. You were wearing formal attire, more formal than what we were wearing in our graduation, you had some make-up on, you were so quiet, you were so still, you were, in a coffin.

Jerry, I really don't know what to say, I closed my eyes and tried to pray. Instead, flashbacks of very happy memories flooded my head and left me with no words to utter. This very moment, I'm still not sure on how to continue writing this letter, the more I try to think of what to write, the more my head goes blank. Maybe I just have to give in to what my mind wants to do and reminisce on our happy times... Here it goes...

I was always looking forward to the end of the class coz we usually hang out in your place and do our home work! We even made our mock-up graduation cap there! We spent some good times in your house with the gang, Edna, Clarla, Donna, Paul, Rainer, Abu, Nap, and Christopher. It was pure fun, except the part when Nap and I got held up right after saying goodbye to you at the gate! That was scary! haha! Ok here's a good one, It was you who taught me the song "Cry" by Mandy Moore! I was arguing that her song "Crush" was her best song yet, you said"No! Not till you hear that song, I Know you'll like it when you hear it!" I said "When and where did you hear it?" you said "in the 2002 MTV Asia music awards, Mandy Moore even sang it with Regine Velasquez!" Haha you know me so well you even had to stress the name Regine Velasquez as if It meant that if Regine sang it then it must be a really good song! Few days later you learned the tittle of the song, bought a copy of her album and played it when were (yet again) in your house. I didn't fall in love with the song instantly but eventually I did.

Some good times there huh Jer? I was hoping it never ended but it did. Or maybe I just have to think that our good times were put to a pause since you have to rest and will resume again when we get to where you are now. Come to think of it Jerry, you seem to be so far now but it is just breath that separates us. Soon we will meet again and will continue having good times as planed. But this time it will be forever.

I love you so much Jerry, my hats off to you for being who you are, kind, loving, you are a positive energy that fills every inch of space that you walk into. Back when we were in senior high I was having a very hard time finishing school and working at the same time to afford it, but with you everything was just simply easier, there was always hope when you are around.

Till the very day I see you again Jerry, remember that I love you so so much. I will miss you for a couple of years. I will see you again. God I don't even want t end this letter. So till we meet again.

On Border Collie Puppies!

I have yet to write about what I do for a living, but here's a little something as a teaser! These are Border Collie pups by the way, their the offsprings of 2 of the best dogs IN THE WORLD Prince and Flirt, in fact, you can see Flirt's (the mom) rear end in the 3rd pic!

This is the first born! Biggest of all!

This is BELT, my favorite! The reason I called her belt is because she has a white stripe across her hips... she's the pinaka makulit of all!

Race Conquered! Condura run for the Dolphins '10

(02.07.10)

Yesterday was my second try to run a half mary... the medal I'm wearing may not mean I won the race, but I won against myself. I finished the race maybe 12 minutes earlier that my 1st record and I did it while trying to suppress the urge to relieve myself (natatae ako for short!). The medal also is a validation of my hard work and perseverance. Even before I started running I already felt good about this day, I knew it was going to be a really good one for me.

Congratulations also to RBC for finishing strong! He too worked hard for this and all the efforts paid off. He finished the race in just 2:49:22 and my non official time is 2:48 something.

And to our avatar's (Anizo & Lem) fans! here they are relaxing after a long race! again, they finished the race gracefully as expected!
